Iran Says It Will Discuss the Strait of Hormuz with Gulf States in Oman on Monday
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that a delegation from the country will meet with Gulf states in Oman on Monday, September 14, to discuss the issue of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which the Islamic Republic has closed during the ongoing war in the Middle East.
The ministry said in a statement on Friday that the meeting aims to promote greater understanding among countries in the region and help strengthen collective regional security. Iraq and other Persian Gulf states will also participate in the meeting.
Iran has been at war since February 28, when U.S.-Israeli attacks killed its Supreme Leader. Iran retaliated with attacks across the region and closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies had previously passed.
After more than six months of war in the Middle East, the closure of the waterway continues to drive oil prices higher, with prices rising above $100 per barrel this week. Oman and Iran, both of which border the Strait of Hormuz, have been holding discussions for several weeks about how the vital waterway will be managed in the future.
